Goodbyes from Ms. Derby

May 31, 2017

To all my Woodland students, past and present:

You are the reason I became first a teacher, a coach, and finally a principal.  I have tried to look for your strongest assets and included you in my decision-making process.  You are great individuals; unique and productive!  Always strive to do your best and give of yourself to make life better for others.  Be courteous and kind to all.  Pease look for the good in others.  Encourage and cheer for your peers.  You can be contributing members of our society not only at Woodland but also in our community and in this big world!  Please always strive to do what is true and right.

I leave you now as I am retiring from Woodland as your principal.  I am not planning on going to another school.  I am planning on reading more, traveling to many faraway places, helping family members and friends, playing golf, and taking care of my new home and yard in Newman, Illinois where I grew up as a child.

You all have been a gift to me.  I have been privileged to have had you either in my classroom, at my school, on the volleyball court, or even in my office.  You have been the reason for me to find my energy and enthusiasm daily.  I think for the most part we have been honest with each other; we have had respect for each other, and I think of each of you as my own.  You have brought me much joy!  I will miss you very much.

I wish you all the very best in life.  You hold our future in your hands.  Be all that you can be.  Be kind and be caring.

Fondly,

Ms. Derby
