20240508 Incident Public Statement

Public release of incident 5/8/24
Posted on 05/08/2024

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I am writing to address a concerning incident that occurred recently involving an inappropriate and threatening poem that was emailed to the 6th grade class from one of their peers through a “google group email message.” The content of the poem contained language and subject matters that were alarming and not suitable for our school, educational setting, or Woodland community.

I want to assure you that the school administration took immediate action upon discovery of this issue. The email account from which the poem was sent has been shut down, and measures were taken to block the poem from being viewed further by students in the class or the student body. Additionally, the school has followed through with its threat assessment team and procedures, and it has been determined that there is no threat to the students or the student body.

We understand that this situation may be unsettling for both you and your child. Please know that the safety and well-being of students are our top priorities, and we take any potential threats seriously. Our school counselors, behavior specialists, social workers, school resource officer, and administrators are available to aid students who may have been affected by this incident, whether they saw the email or not.

We encourage you to continue to have an open dialogue with your child about this incident to address any concerns or questions they may have. If your child has any information or feels unsettled by the situation, please contact Mr. Burcenski, Mrs. Mangrich, Mrs. Starkey, or Mrs.
Lee and they will be happy to assist in any way for your child(s) and family.

We are committed to creating a safe and supportive environment for all students, and we will continue to work diligently to ensure the security of our school community. Thank you for your understanding and support as we navigate through this challenging situation together. If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the school administration.

Sincerely,

Dr. Ryan McGuckin
Superintendent
Woodland CUSD #5
